Anna Boleyn
A queen walks to the scaffold with the whole German film industry watching her go.
What
A German placard of 1920 for the Ufa costume spectacle Anna Boleyn, designed by the Berlin artist Franz Christophe.
Why
Ernst Lubitsch's historical epics were the commercial engine that paid for Weimar cinema's stranger experiments, and they were shot on the same lots by the same crews. The costume picture and the horror picture are siblings, not rivals.
Notice
Christophe came out of the Jugendstil illustration tradition, and the ornamental line here is far more decorative than the flat poster styles that were already displacing it.
“A beheading, drawn beautifully.”
