Chiny i lyudi (Ranks and People)
Three Chekhov stories bound into one film about the small cruelties of rank.
What
A colour lithograph in the landscape format, 72 by 108 cm, published by Mezhrabpom-Film in 1929 and printed at the Second State Chromolithography of Mospoligraf, edition of 10,000.
Why
Yakov Protazanov was the most commercially fluent director working in the USSR, and this Chekhov anthology shows the montage-era poster style applied to material that is anything but revolutionary — proof of how completely the new graphic language had taken over.
Notice
The horizontal format itself: most Soviet one-sheets stand upright, and a landscape sheet was a deliberate and more expensive choice of billing space.
“Chekhov's petty officials, advertised in the visual language of the avant-garde.”
