Der Student von Prag

A young man sells his reflection, and the mirror sends it back to hunt him.

What

A large lithographed stone-printed placard, roughly 139.5 by 92 centimetres, issued in Germany for the 1913 Deutsche Bioscop production directed by Stellan Rye.

Why

This is the poster for the film usually credited with inventing the German fantastic cinema — the first sustained attempt to make the doppelgänger a properly cinematic idea rather than a literary one. Everything the following decade would build on the uncanny double begins here.

Notice

The figure is set against flat, undecorated ground with almost no scenic information. The placard trusts a single standing body to carry the whole idea of the film.

“Before the shadows had a style, they had a man and an empty wall.”

Format

Conservation note

Print produced from an AI-enhanced upscale (≈1.8×) of the surviving archival scan (original 593×945px). The upscale raises resolution only — the design is unaltered, and the paper’s folds and age are the artifact’s own.

Rights: CLEAR. Public domain — U.S. 95-year rule (poster published 1930 or earlier). Gated by the poster’s own publication year, never the film’s. Cleared by registry on 2026-07-18. Star-portrait piece: sold as the artifact, the film named, the star incidental.
