Garragan

A name on a placard, promising a man large enough to need only one.

What

A German placard of 1924 designed by Theo Matejko, whose loose reportorial line dominated German film advertising through the middle of the decade.

Why

By 1924 the German industry had settled into a house manner for its adventure and sensation pictures, and Matejko largely was that manner. Seeing him beside the Expressionist campaigns clarifies what was radical about them and what was simply the trade.

Notice

The title is set to be read across a street at speed: one word, oversized, doing the entire job of identification.

“A whole picture compressed into a single spoken name.”

Format

Sized to protect print quality — this scan supports sizes up to 18x24" cleanly.

Conservation note

Print produced from an AI-enhanced upscale (≈2.4×) of the surviving archival scan (original 482×700px). The upscale raises resolution only — the design is unaltered, and the paper’s folds and age are the artifact’s own.
