Geheimnisse des Orients
The Arabian Nights staged by Russian exiles for a German studio at the end of the silent era.
What
A 1928 German placard for the Ufa production Geheimnisse des Orients, designed by the Austrian-German painter Franz Theodor Würbel.
Why
Directed by Alexandre Volkoff and made largely by émigré Russians working in Berlin and Paris, this is one of the last great silent fantasy spectacles before sound closed the form down. Its production history is a map of interwar European exile.
Notice
By 1928 the placard has become poised and pictorial — the jagged handmade urgency of 1920 has been smoothed into professional studio advertising.
“The fantastic, at the very end of its silence.”
