Mästerman
A pawnbroker takes a girl as security on a debt, and the north goes very quiet.
What
A Swedish placard of 1920 for the Svenska Biografteatern production Mästerman, designed by the painter and book artist Arthur Sjögren.
Why
The Swedish golden age is the other root system of the haunted screen — Sjöström and Stiller taught the Germans that landscape and moral weather could do the work of a monster. Berlin was watching these films closely, and it shows.
Notice
Sjögren was a book designer first, and the poster reads like a title page: ornament, type and image locked into one architecture.
“Dread built out of a debt and a doorway.”
