Mat (Mother)
Gorky's mother, radicalised by grief, in the film that taught the world what montage could do to an audience.
What
An autotype sheet, 107.5 by 62 cm, published by Mezhrabpom-Rus in 1926 in an edition of 15,000, printed at the Iskra Revolyutsii chromolithography of Mospoligraf.
Why
Pudovkin's Mother is the film against which Soviet montage theory was tested and argued for a decade. This is one of the original release sheets — printed to be pasted up and destroyed, which is why so few survive.
Notice
That this sheet is autotype rather than pure lithograph: it reproduces photographic tone, putting the film's own images on the wall rather than an artist's drawing of them.
“The photograph escaping the screen and going out into the street.”
Format
The full-resolution, color-managed file — restored honestly, yours to print and keep.
