The Magician, Newspaper Advertisement

A towering stone idol above two small figures.

What

A 1926 newspaper theatre advertisement for The Magician, an American silent fantasy horror film from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Why

Rex Ingram adapted it from W. Somerset Maugham's 1908 novel, with Alice Terry and Paul Wegener, and the critic Carlos Clarens once called it perhaps the most elusive of lost films.

Notice

The advertisement opens "Bringing a Thousand Thrills and Mysteries Never Seen On the Screen!" and the house promises "Special Music On Our Ascending Wurlitzer".

“A night with the Wurlitzer”
