The Man Who Laughs

A face carved into a permanent smile, and a film that never lets you forget it is a wound.

What

A 1928 half-sheet, the horizontal 22-by-28-inch format displayed in theatre lobbies, for the Universal production directed by Paul Leni.

Why

Adapted from Hugo, made at Universal with a German director and German-trained craft, it is the clearest bridge between Weimar expressionism and the American horror film. Its central image has had an afterlife far beyond the picture itself.

Notice

The horizontal format forces the composition sideways — the artist has to build drama across the width rather than down a one-sheet's height.

“Grief wearing a grin it cannot take off.”

Format

Sized to protect print quality — this scan supports sizes up to 24x36" cleanly.
