The Master Mystery - Episode Eight
A serial built around an automaton, and a star who insisted on doing the escaping himself.
What
A 1919 poster for the eighth episode of the fifteen-chapter serial The Master Mystery.
Why
The serial is generally credited with putting one of the earliest screen robots on film - a walking automaton - years before the metal figures of the German studios. It survives, unusually for a serial of its date, in near-complete form.
Notice
The episode number given its own display block, so a theatre could show returning patrons exactly where the story stood.
“Escape, sold fifteen weeks running.”
