Way Down East

A rural melodrama that ends on breaking ice, sold on the strength of a director's name alone.

What

A 1920 colour lithograph one-sheet, roughly 104 by 70 centimetres, for the D. W. Griffith production.

Why

Griffith paid a reported $175,000 for the rights to a creaking stage melodrama and turned it into one of the highest-grossing films of the silent era. The poster's phrasing — 'D. W. Griffith presents' — marks the point at which an American director became the headline attraction.

Notice

How much sheet is given to the presenter's name relative to the title itself.

“The director as the draw, and the ice already cracking.”

Format

The full-resolution, color-managed file — restored honestly, yours to print and keep.
