Des Kaisers Weihnachtsreise, 1917

Barbed wire and a church under stars.

What

Hans Rudi Erdt's 1917 colour lithograph for the Neuester Film release Des Kaisers Weihnachtsreise, a title that means the Emperor's Christmas trip, from the Rehse-Archiv at the Library of Congress.

Why

Erdt is counted with Bernhard, Hohlwein, Klinger and Scheurich among the most important German poster artists of 1906 to 1918; the Library measures this sheet at 69 x 95 cm.

Notice

Snow lies along the fence posts and the wire, and the imprint at the foot reads "HOLLERBAUM & SCHMIDT BERLIN N 65".
