Le Miracle des loups

Wolves in the snow outside the walls of medieval France, on a sheet nearly two metres across.

What

A grand-format French affiche, 120 × 160 cm, for Raymond Bernard's 1924 historical epic Le Miracle des loups, lithographed after Georges Scott and printed by the Imprimerie SEG.

Why

Le Miracle des loups was the most expensive French film made to that date and premiered at the Paris Opéra — France's deliberate answer to the American historical epic. Scott was a war artist and Illustration draughtsman, and hiring him signalled that the film was to be received as national art rather than trade product.

Notice

The fine-art handling of the snow and the animals: a Salon painter's drawing pressed into commercial lithography, with the seams between printed panels still visible.

“France answering Hollywood at its own scale, and printing the answer two metres wide.”
