L'Équipage

Two men in an observation plane, and the war still close enough to touch.

What

A French affiche of 1928 for Maurice Tourneur's L'Équipage, adapted from Joseph Kessel's novel of a French reconnaissance crew, signed by Bécan.

Why

Kessel had flown in the war himself, and the 1928 film arrived while the aviation picture was at its European peak. It is Maurice Tourneur working in France again after his Hollywood years — a director carrying American production craft back across the Atlantic.

Notice

Bécan, better known for comic line work, restrains it here almost completely; the drawing is sober in a way his comedy sheets never are.

“A war remembered from the air, ten years on.”

Conservation note

Print produced from an AI-enhanced upscale (≈2.8×) of the surviving archival scan (original 454×606px). The upscale raises resolution only — the design is unaltered, and the paper’s folds and age are the artifact’s own.
