Neft (Oil)

A documentary about extraction, sold with the same energy as any melodrama.

What

A chromolithographed one-sheet, 107 by 70 cm, published by Sovkino in Moscow in 1927 in an edition of 8,000 — a notably small run.

Why

Alexander Naumov died in 1928, aged twenty-nine, having produced a body of poster work that stands with the best of the montage school. That a documentary about oil received a designed sheet at all says a great deal about how seriously Soviet non-fiction cinema was promoted.

Notice

The economy of it — a short print run meant fewer colours could be justified, and the design does more with less because of it.

“Industry given the graphics of desire.”

Format

The full-resolution, color-managed file — restored honestly, yours to print and keep.
