Stuart Webbs: Das Rattenloch

Germany's own detective goes down into the rat hole, on a sheet the size of a book page.

What

A small German film advertisement of 1921, measuring 29.5 by 21.5 centimetres, designed by Ludwig Hohlwein for an instalment of the long-running Stuart Webbs detective series.

Why

The Stuart Webbs films were Germany's home-grown answer to the imported detective serials and ran for years. That a designer of Hohlwein's commercial standing took work at this modest scale shows how much care the trade put into even its small-format paper.

Notice

At barely larger than a sheet of writing paper this is a handbill or programme piece rather than a street placard, and Hohlwein has adjusted, tightening the composition for the hand rather than the hoarding.

“A master poster artist, working small.”
