Der Pfarrer von Kirchfeld

The master of the flat poster silhouette turns his hand to an Alpine village drama.

What

Ludwig Hohlwein's 1926 German poster for Der Pfarrer von Kirchfeld, an adaptation of Ludwig Anzengruber's much-filmed peasant play.

Why

Hohlwein was the most imitated German poster designer of the century's first half, and his reductive, flat-planed style shaped commercial art across Europe. Film commissions from him are comparatively scarce, which makes any surviving cinema sheet worth keeping.

Notice

The way form is built from adjacent flat shapes with almost no line — Hohlwein's signature method, and the reason his work reproduced so well at poster scale.

“A rural morality play, drawn by the coolest graphic hand in Munich.”

Conservation note

Print produced from an AI-enhanced upscale (≈2.4×) of the surviving archival scan (original 515×720px). The upscale raises resolution only — the design is unaltered, and the paper’s folds and age are the artifact’s own.
