Die Hochzeit von Valeni

A wedding somewhere east, drawn by the most commercially certain hand in Germany.

What

A German lithographed film placard of 1913 for Die Hochzeit von Valeni, designed by Ludwig Hohlwein. The Commons record establishes the artist, the year and the sheet itself; it names no studio and no director, and neither will we.

Why

1913 is the year German film advertising stopped being typography with a picture attached and started being poster design. Hohlwein was already the country's dominant commercial artist when he took this work, and his arrival in the film trade is a large part of why that shift happened when it did.

Notice

The Hohlwein signature is visible in the construction: flat interlocking areas of colour meeting edge to edge, with no outline and no modelling doing the work between them.

“The year the film placard learned to be a poster.”
