Fänrik Ståls sägner
Runeberg's war poems marched onto the screen, sold by the most prolific poster hand in Sweden.
What
Eric Rohman's 1926 Swedish poster for the film of Johan Ludvig Runeberg's national verse cycle about the Finnish War of 1808–09.
Why
Rohman estimated he produced some seven thousand designs and was one of the very few people in Sweden able to live on poster work alone. His hand effectively is the look of Swedish cinema advertising between the wars.
Notice
Rohman's lettering — hand-drawn rather than set, sitting in the image instead of on top of it.
“A country's founding poem, repainted for the picture palace.”
