Fior di male
The Italian diva film at full voltage, one year into the war.
What
An Italian film poster of 1915 for Carmine Gallone's Fior di male, designed by Aleandro Terzi and lithographed by Enrico Guazzoni.
Why
The diva film was Italy's dominant genre in the mid-1910s — melodramas built entirely around a single magnetic actress, staged with an intensity that shaped European screen acting for a decade. Guazzoni, who lithographed this sheet, was himself one of the great directors of the Italian historical epic.
Notice
The Art Nouveau lettering is doing as much work as the figure; the title is drawn, not set, and the two are designed as one object.
“An entire national cinema built on the face of one performer.”

Conservation note
Print produced from an AI-enhanced upscale (≈2.1×) of the surviving archival scan (original 570×800px). The upscale raises resolution only — the design is unaltered, and the paper’s folds and age are the artifact’s own.
