Les mystères de Paris — Vienna sheet

A Viennese couturier's draughtsman takes on Eugène Sue, and the result is nearly three metres of graphic nerve.

What

Ernst Dryden's 1922 Austrian poster for the Phocéa Film adaptation of Les mystères de Paris, a linen-backed sheet of roughly 95 by 125 centimetres.

Why

Dryden came out of Vienna's poster and fashion world and would later design costumes in Hollywood. Austrian cinema advertising of the early 1920s pulled directly from the Secession and from couture graphics, and this is one of its most confident survivals.

Notice

The compression of a sprawling serial novel into one held gesture — Dryden refuses to itemise the plot.

“Vienna's design schools, briefly working for the box office.”
