Morfinisten

Copenhagen, 1911: a film about addiction, advertised without a single euphemism.

What

The 1911 Danish poster for Morfinisten, issued by Det skandinavisk-russiske Handelshus, carrying a still of the actor Albrecht Schmidt.

Why

Danish cinema in these years took subjects — narcotics, prostitution, suicide — that American and British production codes would spend the next thirty years forbidding. The bluntness of the title is itself the historical evidence.

Notice

The lettering is set flat and plain, with no attempt to soften what is being sold.

“A word on a wall that nobody yet felt obliged to hide.”

Conservation note

Print produced from an AI-enhanced upscale (≈2.1×) of the surviving archival scan (original 609×800px). The upscale raises resolution only — the design is unaltered, and the paper’s folds and age are the artifact’s own.

Rights: CLEAR. Public domain — U.S. 95-year rule (poster published 1930 or earlier). Gated by the poster’s own publication year, never the film’s. Cleared by registry on 2026-07-18. Star-portrait piece: sold as the artifact, the film named, the star incidental.
