Filibus — the airship
A sky pirate lowers herself from a dirigible, and cinema's first great masked thief turns out to be a woman.
What
The 1915 Italian poster for Filibus, produced by Corona Films of Turin, held in the EYE Filmmuseum's poster collection.
Why
Filibus is an aerial jewel-thief who descends from an airship on a winch, moves through society in male disguise, and outwits the detective hunting her. Made a year after Feuillade's Fantômas, it hands the master-criminal role to a woman — a gesture Italian cinema made casually and almost nobody repeated for decades.
Notice
The dirigible is given more of the sheet than the figure; in 1915 the airship itself was still the marvel being sold.
“The future arriving by balloon, with a thief aboard.”
