Iwan der Schreckliche — Wiener Uraufführung

A Soviet serf drama renamed for Vienna, and a poster that puts the chains before the czar.

What

Mihály Bíró's 1927 poster, roughly 126 by 187 centimetres, for the Vienna premiere of Krylya kholopa — retitled Iwan der Schreckliche for Austrian audiences.

Why

The retitling is the history here: a film about a serf's wings sold to Vienna under the name of a tyrant, because a tyrant was the more legible product. Distribution rewrote pictures at the border, and the poster is the receipt.

Notice

Bíró's chain motif, carried over intact from his socialist campaign posters into a commercial cinema commission.

“A film renamed at the frontier, advertised by a man who had crossed one himself.”

Print produced from an AI-enhanced upscale (≈1.7×) of the surviving archival scan (original 1024×692px). The upscale raises resolution only — the design is unaltered, and the paper’s folds and age are the artifact’s own.
