Laster der Menschheit

The man who drew the red hammer for Hungary's labour movement turns his poster arm on a vice film.

What

Mihály Bíró's 1927 Austrian poster for Laster der Menschheit, a linen-backed sheet of about 125 by 185 centimetres.

Why

Bíró was the most consequential political poster designer in central Europe — his 'Red Man' images defined Hungarian social democracy — and after 1919 he worked in Vienna exile, applying the same graphic violence to commercial cinema.

Notice

The scale of the forms. Bíró designed for people moving past at distance; nothing here is meant to be read close up.

“An agitator's vocabulary, rented out to the exploitation trade.”
