Mädchenhandel

A social-problem film sold with the same red-and-black shorthand its designer used for election posters.

What

Mihály Bíró's 1927 poster for the Vienna premiere of Mädchenhandel — Eine internationale Gefahr, a film on international trafficking.

Why

The Aufklärungsfilm — the 'enlightenment picture' — occupied a peculiar zone between social reform and commercial sensation, and its advertising had to do both jobs at once. Bíró's sheet is the clearest surviving instance of that double register.

Notice

How little the design explains. A single figure and a title were expected to carry a subject the poster could not name outright.

“Reform and exploitation, printed in the same ink.”
