La Poule aux œufs d'or

A féerie of hand-tinted marvels, advertised in colour as loud as the film itself.

What

A Pathé Frères affiche for the 1905 trick-film féerie La Poule aux œufs d'or, designed by Cândido Aragonez de Faria and distributed in the Netherlands by Jean Desmet.

Why

The féerie was early cinema's most extravagant genre — stencil-coloured fairy spectacle built on stage machinery — and the poster had to promise colour on a screen most audiences had only seen in black and white. This is the sales pitch for the medium's first special effects.

Notice

The palette runs deliberately hotter than any photograph of the era could be; Faria is selling the stencil colour, not the story.

“A promise of enchantment, printed before cinema had learned modesty.”
