Les Vampires de la côte

Wreckers on a black coast, printed the year cinema discovered it liked crime.

What

A wide Pathé Frères affiche of 1908 for the melodrama Les Vampires de la côte, drawn at Faria's Paris atelier.

Why

Seven years before Feuillade's serial made the word famous, 'vampires' already meant coastal wreckers and criminal gangs in French popular melodrama. This poster catches the taste for organised villainy at the moment it moved from the boulevard novel onto film.

Notice

The drama is carried almost entirely by the dark tonal mass of sea and cliff — Faria lets a single lit figure do all the narrative work.

“The French appetite for elegant crime, already fully formed in 1908.”
