Le Tragique Amour de Mona Lisa

Printed while the Mona Lisa was still missing from the Louvre, and all Paris was looking for her.

What

A large Pathé Frères affiche, 161 × 118 cm, for Albert Capellani's 1912 short Le Tragique Amour de Mona Lisa, written by the young Abel Gance and issued from the Faria atelier.

Why

The painting had been stolen from the Louvre in August 1911 and was still missing when this film was released in May 1912; Pathé moved on the story within months. It is one of the earliest clear cases of cinema seizing a live news sensation, and the poster is the evidence of how fast the industry could move.

Notice

The scale — nearly five feet tall — was meant for a boulevard wall, not a lobby; the drawing is built to read from across a street.

“A stolen painting, a missing masterpiece, and an industry already learning to chase the headlines.”
