Vercingétorix

Gaul's defeated chieftain conscripted into the young French film industry's history lessons.

What

A Pathé Frères affiche of 1909 for the historical reconstruction Vercingétorix, designed by Cândido Aragonez de Faria and printed at the Imprimerie Pathé Frères.

Why

The Third Republic taught Vercingétorix as the founding French patriot, and Pathé's history films sold that schoolroom myth back to the public as spectacle. The poster is a record of cinema learning that national memory was commercial material.

Notice

The lithographic stone work in the armour and drapery — flat colour laid in separate passes, with the drawing carried entirely by black keyline.

“A nation's founding legend, priced for the ticket window.”

Format

The full-resolution, color-managed file — restored honestly, yours to print and keep.
